reading Fluency
What is fluency?
Fluency is the ability to read accurately, automatically (quickly), and with expression. Fluent reading sounds like conversational speaking - it flows and does not sound choppy or robot-like. Fluency is often referred to as the bridge between word reading (decoding) and comprehension. Once the bridge is secure, the reader is able to understand more easily what is being read.
Why is fluency important?
Fluent reading allows the reader to focus less on decoding the words in a text and thereby frees up the brain to focus more on understanding what is read (comprehension).
Ways to become a more fluent reader:
- Children should read, read, and read! Just as a child practices to develop skills for dancing, swimming, or playing an instrument, reading provides the needed practice to build automaticity and overall fluency.
- Children should reread familiar texts to practice reading in longer phrases and with expression.
- Adults can model fluency by reading aloud to children of all ages.
- Poetry provides another way to build fluency skills.
